About Flora
Tell us a little about your background. When did you start creating content What got you to start?
My background is in marketing, I was working full-time as a marketing manager for a tech startup when I began working on content creation for my Instagram account. I loved the company I worked for, but it wasn’t the most fashion-forward environment for me. In 2016 I started posting consistently before work, on my lunch break, after work, and on weekends. About almost a year of doing that, brands started noticing me and getting comfortable paying me, so I decided to leave my job to pursue blogging full-time.
Do you see creating content as your full-time job or more of a hobby that you do in your free time?
It began as a hobby during my free time, but it’s been my full-time job for over 4 years now!
What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced or you are facing as a creator/influencer?
Balance. When you share so much of your life through social media for work, it’s hard to learn to balance, and when to power off to enjoy the moment, rather than using your smartphone or camera to capture it. Now I make sure to save certain and special moments, keeping them off of social media and just for myself.
Tips for other creators
What kinds of tools do you use to stay consistent and active on your social media?
I don’t use any management tools, but I make sure to tune in regularly and engage with my readers and other influencers in my industry. It’s important to keep the “social” aspect of social media present! If there’s certain content that needs to go live at a specific date/time, I just schedule it into my calendar.
What are some of your favorite editing tools?
Snapseed, VSCO, and Lightroom on my iPhone. I shoot and edit using my iPhone, I like the portability, convenience, and that the quality is still maintained.
What are some tips for creators who are just getting started?
Make sure to enjoy yourself while doing what you do, your love and enthusiasm will show in your work and is what will draw people to you! It will also keep you consistent and motivated to keep going when things get hard. If you want to make this a full-time job, it’s a marathon, not a sprint! Also it’s ok to take breaks when you need so you don’t burn out.
Do you have any specific goals set for yourself for the coming months?
Yes, every season and year is different! I am hoping to bring more travel content into my feed the coming months (pending restrictions of course).
How do you balance your personal and work life?
This took a while to learn and implement, but it’s all about making a schedule for myself, sticking to it, and learning to say no to certain things when I know it might blur the lines between work and personal life. Once I set and stuck to these boundaries, it was easy to maintain balance and remain stress-free!
How did you “learn” the ways of content creation? Are there any resources you see as necessary?
It was trial and error as well as learning from others! Practice makes perfect, but there’s lots of photographers and videographers who share tips on YouTube, those were very helpful for me.
What kind of advice do you have for creators who are not seeing any progress or success?
If you’re consistent and producing quality, relatable content, just keep going! Remember this is a marathon and not a sprint, so you have to be in it for the long haul. The success does take time and engagement comes in waves, especially with how saturated social media platforms are today. Just keep going!
Working with brands
What have you found to be the biggest challenge in working with brands?
This took a lot of practice, but getting comfortable negotiating and reviewing contracts. This is so important because the fine print matters! I didn’t have a legal background so this was just a skill I had to improve myself on over time.
What brands have you worked with in the past? What are some that you would like to work with?
Some favourites recently are Sephora, Nordstrom, White Claw, and Revolve! I’d love to continue building my relationships with them and work together again since I prefer long term partnerships. On my wishlist to work with is any pet brands so I can include my dog in more content!
Takeaway:
Stay creative and positive while you do what you do and take breaks when you need them! When I had the most success was when I was enjoying myself, it’s hard to inspire people when you’re burnt out.
