About Jordan
Tell us a little about your background. When did you start creating content? What got you to start?
I started my account in July of 2020 when I was feeling super burnt out at my corporate job. I actually have an accounting degree but after a few years in the field I found it extremely draining so I knew that it wasn’t for me long-term. So I started my account as a creative outlet during the middle of quarantine and it kind of took off from there and it ended up becoming so much more for me.
Do you see creating content as your full-time job or more of a hobby that you do in your free time?
It’s definitely become more of a job for me in the past few months, but it’s a job that I truly love doing. Getting to be creative every day is so good for my soul.
What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced or you are facing as a creator/influencer?
I think the biggest challenge is figuring out how to navigate this industry. It definitely has it’s challenges and often at times, you don’t have anyone helping you figure it out because it’s just….you. So, I’m always trying to figure things out as I go. Another one is dealing with creative burnout. I think all content creators go through it sometimes so it’s learning how to work through that as well.
Tips for other creators:
What kinds of tools do you use to stay consistent and active on your social media?
I’m not sure that I have tools, but really for me it’s been helpful to have some kind of a routine. I kind of set different times throughout the day for me to check in and reply to comments and things. But breaks are also important too, so I do typically have one day on the weekend where I don’t check in so that I can take time to clear my mind and be present.
What are some of your favorite editing tools? (If you use them)
Definitely Lightroom for editing photos. Lightroom allows you to edit from any device, but I like to use the Tezza app for mobile and video editing! The Tezza app offerrs many aesthetic presets to choose from and simple editing tools.
What are some tips for creators who are just getting started?
Keep showing up – consistency is key for building a platform. But be consistent in a way that’s manageable for you, don’t post every day if you don’t have the bandwidth. And challenge yourself to step outside of your comfort zone whether that’s with creating new content or reaching out to brands.
Do you have any specific goals set for yourself for the coming months?
My current goal is to hit 15k on my Instagram account before the end of the year, and 10k on TikTok. And then I also have some more business related goals but those might have to be a secret for now… :)
How do you balance your personal and work life?
Time with my friends/family is always my number one priority because you don’t get that time back. So sometimes you’ll find me replying to emails and editing photos super late at night so that I’m able to spend more time with my husband and friends during the day. But I’m okay with that because it allows me to not miss those important little moments that I might not be able to be present for otherwise.
How did you “learn” the ways of content creation? Are there any resources you see as absolutely necessary?
I would say that I’m mostly self-taught as I’ve kind of always had a more unique style with my content creation, but I’m always drawing inspiration from other creators!
What kind of advice do you have for creators who are not seeing any progress or success?
Everyone grows at a different pace, so you shouldn’t compare yourself to others. Just keep showing up and try not to get frustrated. If you put in the work it will definitely pay off in the long run.
Working with brands:
What have you found to be the biggest challenge in working with brands?
It can definitely be tricky finding brands that are actually willing to pay you what you’re worth sometimes, so many just want to compensate you via “exposure” which is not the same. But I’ve learned to be more confident about my rates because I know my value.
What brands have you worked with in the past? What are some that you would like to work with?
I’ve been lucky enough to work with tons of awesome brands like Victrola, Apartment Therapy, Ruggable, Lull, and Rugs USA but I’d definitely love to branch out and work with some other new brands in the future. A few in particular I’d love to work with would be Urban Outfitters, Article, and Spell (a sustainable clothing brand from Australia).
Takeaway:
I think the most important thing to remember is to just be yourself. Don’t try to create content that looks like everyone else, because your vision and your unique style is what sets you apart. I know it sounds cheesy to say, but content creation has really allowed me to find parts of myself again after a really difficult few years had left me feeling empty and lost. I never imagined having a job like this, but I’m so grateful to be where I am now and for everything that might be coming my way in the future.
